Modify for your own use; these are specific instructions to produce the icon below. If you are confused, let me know via e-mail!

ONE. Paste the base into a new Photoshop document. Make sure the setttings are 100 pixels by 100 pixels, with a Transparent background, and RGB mode.

TWO. Make sure you only have the base (Layer 1) and then go to Filter >> Sharpen.

THREE. Duplicate the base into a new layer (Layer 2). Set it to Screen at 50%. Merge visible layers. (Layers >> Merge Visible)

FOUR. Duplicate the base into a new layer (Layer 3), and sharpen it by going to Filter >> Sharpen. Set it to Soft Light at 25%.

FIVE. Copy the scratch texture below (credit: Fabbity Fab!) into a new layer underneath Layer 3. Set it to Screen at 100%.


SIX. Make a new layer underneath the texture layer and fill it with #009EA4. Set this layer to Overlay at 50%.

SEVEN. Merge all visible layers (Layers >> Merge Visible), save, and voila! You should end up with something like this:
